Bield aims to hit high note with volunteer befriender in Dunbar

Silver SurferBield has launched an appeal to find a friendly and enthusiastic volunteer for its Southfield Court Retirement Housing Development in Dunbar to assist a tenant’s wish to get more involved with the local musical community.

Befriender volunteers are crucial in every Bield development, offering social support and companionship on a one-to-one basis for the tenants for a period of several hours on a weekly basis.

Development manager Kate Donohue said: “The volunteer programme at Southfield Court is evolving.

“We have recently brought in computer tutors, as part of our Silver Surfers programme, as well as a keep fit trainer and all voluntary efforts are received warmly.

“The positive feedback we have received proves that this programme is incredibly beneficial and rewarding for our tenants and our volunteers.”

The tenant is searching for befriender to help him become more involved in the local musical community as he used to be a professional musician and has played the organ for many years. He has conducted very large choirs, played on cruise ships and used to play the cinema organ to provide music and sound effects to accompany silent films.

The volunteer initiative reinforces the ‘Free to Be’ ethos of Bield, one of Scotland’s leading housing and care providers, which aims to help older people to make their own decisions and maintain independence whilst offering assistance if they need it.

If you share a passion for music, enjoy socialising with others and can spare a few hours a week, Bield would love to hear from you. If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information please call Kate Donohue on 01368 863063.

A car owner would be preferable, but is not essential as the tenant has a taxi card.

Please note that these are volunteer, unpaid positions. We thank everyone for their enquiry, however we hope you understand that not all enquiries will result in volunteer placements.
