The Southfield Court development, managed by care and housing provider Bield, began their charity work after hearing of ‘Mary’s Meals’, a charity which looks to assist with the development of children’s education in third world countries.

Recognising education as invaluable and admiring the charity’s desire to ensure children get one hot meal a day when in school, tenants of Southfield Court decided to do all they could to help.

Sourcing 30 school bags from the likes of charity shops and sales at Asda, all of the tenants at Southfield Court used their own money to fill the bags with everything from jotters and pencils to clean, good quality clothes for the kids.

Kate Donohoe, retirement manager at the development, said: “It has been absolutely wonderful to see our tenants pull together and do something so remarkable for charity.

“It has taken around three months for all 30 bags to be filled but the end result has been absolutely priceless and it has been incredibly rewarding for everyone at the development.

“At Bield, we like to encourage tenants to live independently by our ‘free to be’ ethos and this project has been a fantastic example of our tenants doing exactly this and something which is important to them.”

With 30 bags filled and already in Africa, tenants at Southfield Court received a letter from the Mary’s Meals thanking them for their hard work and kindness.

Keen to carry on their good deed, Southfield Court have now started to source 30 more bags which they intend to fill with gifts to help contribute to the Mary’s Meals cause.
