Community garden opens in Maryhill

community garden(1)A new “mini multis” community garden and play park has been created with support from Maryhill Housing Association.

The grand opening saw a bumper turnout of around 250 people turn out to mark the occasion which brings play facilities and a community garden to this part of Maryhill for the first time.

The new area is the brainchild of the Mini Multis’ Residents Association which secured £250,000 from the Big Lottery Fund Scotland to make the dream a reality.

Judging by the crowds, the facility will prove to be an amazing success.

The playpark, located just off Shiskine Drive, is a particularly welcome boost as local youngsters – especially those growing up in nearby blocks of flats – have never had nearby play facilities before.

The opening was performed by local teenager Lee Falconer who was named in December as STV”s “Real Young Hero of the Year” for his good work in the community.

Lee was assisted in the ribbon cutting by local youngsters.

Jamie Ballantine of Maryhill Housing Association said: “The grand opening is the result of many months of very hard work by the Mini Multis’ Residents’ Association which is deeply committed to improving the community for the people who live here. The garden and the playground are the perfect way of doing just that.

“And with spring just around the corner it is the ideal time to be launching an outdoor play area for local children.”
