East Lothian Council tenant evicted for drug offences

east lothian councilEast Lothian Council has evicted a tenant from a property in Haddington following a catalogue of antisocial behaviour offences.

The tenant was removed from a property at Hardgate for breaching his tenancy agreement after he was convicted of a number of drug offences committed in and around his tenancy. These included being found in possession of cannabis at his home address on 2 May 2014 and on Market Street, Haddington on 18 November 2014.

The council had also received complaints from a number of the tenant’s neighbours regarding a constant stream of visitors to his property at all times of the day and night and of those visitors constantly buzzing the buzzers of other residents. There was also evidence of drugs misuse found in and around the property.

East Lothian Council leader, Willie Innes, said: “Drug misuse and antisocial behaviour can bring an assortment of concerns and problems to local communities. East Lothian Council has strong procedures in place to tackle the misery caused by drug misuse and the council’s tenancy agreement clearly details the responsibilities expected of our tenants. Using or allowing a property to be used for illegal purposes such as drug taking is a breach of that agreement. I am grateful to individuals who helped both the Safer Communities team and the Police to gather the evidence required to secure this eviction.”
