Families in Glasgow’s Arden are in line for a £6.4 million housing boost after a major new development was announced by Glen Oaks Housing Association.

Forty eight new homes are to be built on the site of a former school bringing much-needed new housing to the community.

The homes will be built on the site of the former St Louise Primary School and work will begin this month. It closed in 2009 with the buildings now demolished.

This week Glen Oaks hailed the announcement as “great news for the community”.

Chief executive Alasdair McKee said: “Everyone will welcome this exciting new development of homes – it is just what the community needs. Glen Oaks is deeply committed not just to making our communities great places in which to live but to building new homes which people really want.”

The new housing is the fifth such development in the last 10 years which has delivered 150 new homes for Arden and has come about with generous financial assistance from the Scottish Government via Glasgow City Council – which has provided half the cost.

Alasdair added: “We are very grateful to Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government who share our vision of creating new homes. We are all working together to bring real benefits to the communities we serve.”

Elaine McShane, chairperson of Glen Oaks, added: “This is terrific news for Arden. Glen Oaks understands only too well the need for new housing in our community. These 48 new homes are another significant step forward in the regeneration or Arden.”

Arden’s latest housing boost comes at the same time as Glen Oaks has undertaken four major refurbishment projects in the area transforming 430 tenements and in turn making a big difference to people’s lives.

And it brings the total Glen Oaks has spent on housing in Arden since the housing association was created in 1991 to £25m.
