Maryhill Housing celebrates 40th anniversary with family fun day

Maryhill Housing has celebrated four decades of serving the community with a family fun day held at Maryhill Burgh Halls.

The occasion was well attended by kids, mums, dads, grans and grandads from across Maryhill and Ruchill who joined staff and Board members for an afternoon of fun and games with a firm emphasis on the family.

Like all birthday parties there was a magnificent cake, appropriately enough, in the shape of a house which was cut and handed out to many of those attending.

Maryhill Housing has grown steadily since it was founded in a tenement in the East Park area of Maryhill on June 30 1977.

A key development in its history was the stock transfer from Glasgow Housing Association which transformed the organisation into a much bigger housing association.

Like so many housing providers, a key feature of Maryhill Housing’s work has been regenerating its communities and helping its tenants to fight poverty wherever it occurs.

The family fun day featured traditional games, face painting, a pirate treasure hunt and contributions from two choirs –Connect Sing and Maryhill Integration Network Joyous Choir – who brought a wonderful musical flavour to proceedings.

A Maryhill Housing spokesperson said: “Thank you to everyone who came along or contributed and made it a day to remember. It was entirely fitting that the focus of this major event should be the family and we hope everyone had a great time.”

Further events are planned throughout the year including free canal trips on the Forth and Clyde canal which flows through Maryhill and which begin this coming Saturday.
