The RIAS Awards demonstrate the quality of architecture across Scotland. Any type of architectural project can win an award, with judges focussing on architectural integrity, usability and context, delivery and execution and sustainability.

Maryhill Locks, designed by jmarchitects, was recognised for its sustainable homes that “reinterpret the traditional terrace”.

The judges noted the project’s sleek design, which includes brick enclosures to conceal bins and cars, as well as its wide range of community and wellbeing offerings such as a hidden on-site allotment and a linking footpath behind rear gardens to act as a safe space for children to play.

Christina Gaiger, RIAS president, said: “The Covid-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of our built environment to individuals and communities, and the RIAS Awards are a moment to pause and celebrate the incredible difference that architects are making across the country.

“This year’s RIAS Awards demonstrate the critical role architecture can play – whether that is delivering better homes and public services, addressing climate change, celebrating our shared culture and heritage, or simply giving moments of real delight. There is a real breadth in this year’s clutch of RIAS Awards, and each of them is a very worthy winner.”

Gary Watt, development manager at igloo, said: “It’s fantastic to see Maryhill Locks being recognised for its wellbeing and community initiatives. We put a big focus on the overall masterplan, which was prepared over a nine-month period with a lot of participation from the local neighbourhood. We aimed to deliver a sustainable project, in line with our footprint® methodology, and this award proves that our hard work paid off.”

As a winner of the 2021 RIAS Awards, Maryhill Locks now sits on the longlist for the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award. The shortlist will be announced on 30 September, with the winner announced on 30 November.

Maryhill Locks is a joint venture between PfP igloo and Scottish Canals, and is being delivered by BIGG Regeneration
