Melville launches Great Gardens competition

Melville gardenTo showcase the work of its many unsung gardening heroes, Melville Housing Association has launched a Great Gardens competition, giving three green-fingered tenants the chance to put their names up in lights and win a fantastic prize.

The Baxter Keiller Prize, named in memory of a keen Melville tenant who, along with his neighbour Christine McGrouther, transformed a patch of Mayfield wasteland into a fantastic community garden, will be awarded to the best Melville garden, judged by a panel of experts.

“We were all extremely sad to hear of Baxter’s death last year,” said Andrew Noble, Melville chief executive. “The gardening work he did alongside his neighbour Christine was fantastic and inspiring to all of us at Melville. We couldn’t think of a better way of celebrating his memory than by launching a competition to encourage others.”

The first prize is £75 of vouchers with two runner-up prizes of £25 each. Gardeners should enter as soon as possible so that we have the opportunity to get photographs of gardens looking their best and most colourful.

Completed entry forms must be returned to Melville no later than Friday 7 August 2015. Judging will take place in late August and winners will be announced at Melville’s Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 9 September 2015.
