A 5-a-side football tournament has been held in honour of a former New Gorbals Housing Association colleague and to raise funds for charities.

Now in its second year, the Michael Houghton Memorial Cup saw 16 teams take part in the annual event.

Players and spectators from fellow housing associations and contractors came together to help raise £1850 to be donated to The Brain Tumour Charity and a Malawi school building trip.

New Gorbals have been raising funds throughout the year to support the pupils Malawi trip. Four young women from the Gorbals will join their classmates in Malawi this June to build and refurbish classrooms, as well as building a fresh water well.

This incredibly successful venture by Holyrood Secondary School, in partnership with Mary’s Meals, is now in its 10th year.

New Gorbals would like to thank everyone who came along and made the day a fantastic success despite the weather. Congratulations also go to the ECG Facilities, who won the tournament on the day.

After coming second for two years in a row, our own team members have their sights set on clinching the title next time around.
