Sanctuary’s regeneration project creates 40 apprenticeships

The final 206 of the regeneration project’s 540 homes are being built and will be completed by April 2018.

Sanctuary is committed to providing employment and training opportunities for local people at its sites throughout the UK.

The housing provider has worked with CCG (Scotland) Ltd, its construction partner in Anderston, to create 40 apprenticeships so Glasgow’s young adults can earn a wage as they learn.

Eleanor Derbyshire, senior development manager at Sanctuary Homes, said: “It’s great to see the apprentices on site, growing in confidence. They also get an opportunity to study. Once they’re qualified the apprentices can move on to other opportunities.

“Apprenticeships help to build capacity within the construction industry. This is important for Sanctuary and other organisations as we build more homes and meet the needs of our communities.”

Joiners Jack Gorman, 20, and Lewis Cuthbert, 18, are among twenty CCG apprentices currently helping build Sanctuary’s final 206 Anderston flats. These homes, a mix of social and mid-market rent, will be managed by Sanctuary Scotland.

Billy McGill, CCG’s project manager for the regeneration of Anderston, said: “Around 40 apprentices have come through the ranks at Anderston. Some of them have returned to work on the project as fully qualified tradespeople.

“Our apprentices are trained very well and learn all aspects of their trade. This stands them in good stead long term and is a win-win for CCG and the apprentices.

“Without Sanctuary’s investment and CCG’s construction these young people wouldn’t be in the position they are in today.

“Sanctuary’s input in conjunction with CCG is replenishing the industry throughout, both here in Glasgow and elsewhere.”
