Two more housing figures named Partick Thistle Community Champions

McDonalds-Community-Champion-900x520A woman who has been serving the North Glasgow community for over 40 years and another who has worked tirelessly in the PossilPark area for over 15 years have both been named Community Champions by Partick Thistle Football Club.

Sadie Gordon is a retired youth and community health worker, but she likes to stay in touch with her community and has worked tirelessly in and around North Glasgow, where she has lived and worked for over 40 years.

But retirement hasn’t slowed Sadie down. She has served on the Board of management of Queens Cross Housing Association since 2006. Sadie is also a Board member representative for the Woodside Community Involvement Group and is involved in a number of external groups including an NHS Scotland Public Partnership Forum. She is also involved in the Greater Milton and Possilpark Credit Union.

Sadie is also chair of Young People’s Futures, and has taken part in the Possilpark Summer Camp for over 30 years – making a real difference to the lives of the young people in the area. In honour of her work in the community, Sadie was named Unsung Hero of 2014 at the Herald Society Awards in recognition of 40 years of dedicated service to a dizzying tally of community projects in North Glasgow.

Sadie is a family person with three sons and one daughter, Sadie has six grandchildren and three great grandchildren but she still finds time to make a valuable contribution to the community.

While Sadie was nominated to be Partick Thistle Community Champion at last Thursday evening’s game at Firhill, the game on Sunday saw the recognition given to Helen Graham.

Nominated by the Hawthorn Housing Co-operative, Helen has been a member of the management committee at the Co-operative for 16 years and has been chair for nine of these years.

As chair she has provided a massive amount of support for new committee members, helping them to take on their responsibilities.

During this time Helen has worked tirelessly for the community of Hawthorn which she loves. Hawthorn is a small area in Possilpark and Helen has led the Co-op to transform the area and provide a better quality of life for the community.

Helen has lived almost all of her life in this area; she works full-time in the community and is well known and respected by the entire community. Not a day passes without Helen doing some work on behalf of the Co-operative – all with the aim of improving the area.

Helen has been prepared to make difficult decisions that will benefit the community in the long term and has a real belief in the co-op’s ethos of self-help, community and fairness.
