Housing Associations in a Nutshell (HAIAN)

Who’s it for and what’s it about?
This is a comprehensive six evening introductory course for new Committee/Board members or those who want, or need a refresher. It will introduce you to the work of housing associations and co-operatives helped by a group of highly experienced trainers.
It will increase your understanding of the various aspects of the business and help you contribute more effectively in your Committee/Board meetings. It is a great chance to learn the basics with other Committee/Board members.
The six evening sessions will cover the following:
23.10.23 Housing associations/co-operatives – an introduction
This session gives some background on the history of the development of housing associations in Scotland, how they are run along with an introduction to the role of the Scottish Housing Regulator.
01.11.23 The Role of the Committee/Board
This session will increase your understanding of the various aspects of the business and help you contribute more effectively in your Committee/Board meetings. It’s a great chance to learn the basics of your roles and responsibilities along with other Committee/Board members.
06.11.23 Housing Management – an introduction
This session will give an overview of the law and regulation that applies to housing management. It will also look at the basics of allocations, tenancy relations, rent management, anti-social behaviour and estate management.
13.11.23 Finance – an introduction
This session provides an overview of the finances of a housing association/co-operative and the role of the Committee/Board in monitoring the organisation’s financial health.
20.11.23 Maintenance – an introduction
This session looks at the importance of the maintenance function, the legislation underpinning the maintenance service and the role of the Committee/Board to monitor performance.
27.11.23 Development – an introduction
The final session of the programme provides an introduction to the role of development and procurement.
