384-apartment development approved for Glasgow’s south side
More than 300 properties are to be built on an old industrial site between the Gorbals and Govanhill.
Glasgow City Council has awarded planning consent to Craighead Properties for the erection of 384 homes on brownfield on land at Cathcart Road, Caledonia Road and Lawmoor Street.
Under the plans, five blocks will be delivered around a central amenity space. There will be 76 one-bedroom flats, 259 with two bedrooms (plus 12 two-bedroom penthouses) and 41 three-bedroom properties. Vehicle access will be from Lawmoor Street.
The 4.7-hectare site has been vacant for more than 25 years having previously been used as Dixon’s iron foundry and latterly for a cash and carry.
The development is beside a new retail park which is under construction.
A statement contained in papers by architects Cooper Cromar reads: “Craighead Properties Ltd propose to develop a quality residential development within the brownfield site which has been promoted for residential development for several years.
“The development site is bounded by Cathcart Road, Crown Street, Lawmoor Street and a proposed retail park to the south west boundary and extends to an area of 4.7 Ha.
“This residential development will deliver and reinforce a robust urban edge to both Cathcart Road and Crown Street and strengthen the residential streetscape i.e. Crown Street to Cathcart Road as a gateway development to one of Glasgow’s primary arterial routes to the city centre.”
The statement adds: “A diverse range of contemporary flat layout and sizes will be delivered from one bedroom to two-bedroom standard units with three-bedroom roof level flats, all flats have been carefully orientated to ensure maximum sunlight to living spaces and outlook to amenity spaces if possible.
“Open plan living space i.e. lounge/kitchen/dining space will provide a clean and contemporary interior with access to glazed “balconies/terraces at higher levels and private screened decks to ground floor flats.”
