At An Allt Dubh, in Newmarket in the Isle of Lewis, a 72-home housing development was officially opened on 21 October by Hebridean Housing Partnership (HHP) board member and ward councillor Duncan Macinnes.
The project was delivered by CalMax Construction in three phases, with the final phase completed in May this year.
The project includes one- to four-bedroom detached and semi-detached homes, such as 13 adapted properties, with the mixture satisfying a variety of housing needs.
In July 2022, work started on the site. The project represents a £14.17 million investment, supported by £9.75 million in Scottish Government grant funding and £4.42 million from HHP.
The development has been designed as an extension to the current Newmarket community.
Calum Mackay, HHP chair, said: “An Allt Dubh is a significant addition to Newmarket, providing 72 high-quality homes, adding to the strong community that is already here.
“It also brings a wider choice of homes for individuals and families and makes a long-lasting positive contribution to the area.”
Social justice and housing secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville said: “We are proud to have supported this development, which will provide 72 high-quality, energy-efficient, affordable homes for the Newmarket community.
“Good quality housing like this is essential to attract and retain people in our rural and island communities.”
Somerville added: “By working with partners such as Hebridean Housing Partnership, we are delivering homes for a wide range of needs, including quality family homes, which is central to our key priority of eradicating child poverty.
“We remain focused on delivering 110,000 affordable homes across Scotland by 2032, with at least 70% for social rent and at least 10% in our rural and island communities.”
James Mackinnon, project manager at CalMax Construction Limited, said: “We are pleased to have worked with Hebridean Housing Partnership and the wider project team to deliver 72 new homes at An Allt Dubh.
“As a local contractor, we take pride in building homes for people in our own community.”
Mackinnon added: “It’s good to see the development complete and residents settled in.”
