Accessible Housing Network calls for a Scotland that works for everyone

The Scottish Accessible Housing Network, led by accessible housing champions and Link Group partner, Horizon Housing Association, has brought the country’s accessible housing challenges into focus with their call-to-action statement.

In Accessible Homes for Scotland: A Call for Action, the network outlines its vision for a Scotland where everyone, regardless of age or ability, can live independently with dignity.

Scottish Accessible Housing Network chair and Horizon Housing Association chief executive Michael Driscoll said: “With an ageing population and over 100,000 disabled people living in homes that do not meet their needs, the accessible housing crisis is one of the most urgent challenges facing our society today.

“Accessible housing is essential infrastructure that underpins health, independence, and equality.

“As Scotland’s demographic profile changes, the need for homes that are adaptable and inclusive has never been greater.”

The Accessible Housing Network brings together partners, advocates, and lived experience to call for decisive action.

Accessible Homes for Scotland: A Call for Action puts lived experience at the centre of all housing policy and design, and sets out a roadmap for change, including:

  • National and local targets for accessible housing, informed by robust data and a National Strategy for Independent Living.
  • The creation of a truly accessible, tenure-neutral housing standard, co-designed with disabled people.
  • Secure and expand funding for adaptations, ensuring timely support across all tenures.
  • Engaging the private sector to deliver accessible homes as standard.
  • Transparent tracking and reporting of accessible housing stock and unmet need.

The Accessible Housing Network calls on leaders across Scotland to join them in making accessible homes a national priority.
