Angela Rayner has resigned as Deputy Prime Minister, Housing Secretary, and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party after an ethics inquiry found her in breach of the ministerial code.

The investigation, led by the independent adviser on ministers’ interests, Sir Laurie Magnus, followed Ms Rayner’s admission that she had underpaid stamp duty on a second home. She attributed the error, which amounted to an underpayment of around £40,000 on an £800,000 seaside flat in Hove, to “poor advice” and stated she “deeply regretted” it.

The resignation, which came at noon on Friday, September 5, concludes a turbulent week for Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, coming at the start of his government’s “phase two” reset. Mr Starmer had previously been non-committal about his deputy’s future should a breach be found.

Ms Rayner’s departure now triggers an election for the deputy leadership of the Labour Party, just weeks before the party’s annual conference in Liverpool.
