Apartments plan at former Glasgow convent refused on appeal

An appeal into Glasgow City Council’s rejection of an application to develop new apartments on the site of a former convent has been rejected.

Iain Wilson Properties had sought to demolish the vacant property at 32 Mansionhouse Road and build 20 two-bedroom flats in a five-storey block.

Planners rejected the DTA Architects-designed plans in April this year, citing a lack of justification for the loss of the sandstone villa.

Issues raised in the refusal included the loss of mature trees without a “good arboricultural reason”, no energy statement, inadequate screening for flood risk and the loss of a traditional sandstone building without “reasoned justification”.

It also stated there was no adequate cycle parking or open space provision.

But the developer requested a review of the decision, claiming that a “thorough review” of the surrounding buildings had been carried out to determine “optimal scale and massing” and that cycle parking, as well as 20 car parking spaces, would be provided.

However, the review found in favour of the original decision.
