Barrhead green belt housing bid set for refusal
A bid to build new homes on protected green belt land in Barrhead is expected to be rejected this week.
Ramzan Properties is seeking permission in principle from East Renfrewshire Council to develop a site north‑east of Dubbs Road, opposite Cowan Park. The firm wants to deliver five “high‑quality” four‑ and five‑bedroom detached villas, accessed via Montfort Gate.
However, the proposal has triggered objections over the loss of green belt, impacts on local wildlife and the removal of mature trees. Planning officers have now recommended that councillors refuse the application when it comes before the planning committee on Wednesday.
In their report, officers state the scheme would “result in the loss of part of the green belt… and part of Dams to Darnley Country Park”, adding that the scale of tree removal required is a “significant concern”. They conclude there are “no overriding reasons” to justify approving what they describe as a speculative departure from the council’s local development plan.
Developers argue the project would support “town‑centre living” by providing family homes close to amenities, schools and greenspace, and claim it would “positively contribute to healthy growth within Barrhead”.
