Charity Spotlight: Street Connect bridges gap to a brighter future

The Scottish Housing News Charity Spotlight feature will highlight the vital work of charities across Scotland each Friday. To include your local charity, whether housing-related or not, send your story and images to us at newsdesk@scottishnews.com.

At Street Connect, we understand that maintaining recovery after completing a residential rehab programme can be undoubtedly challenging. The process of reintegrating back into the community can be equally daunting. We recognise these difficulties and stand ready with support which can be essential for those transitioning back into society.

Move-On Accommodation and Personalised Support:

Street Connect offers a custom-made move-on accommodation program, aiming to assist individuals in their reintegration process. Fully furnished and modern, the living spaces we provide alleviate the pressures of daily life, allowing residents to concentrate on their recovery journey. Independent living skills are cultivated, and a long-term vision for success is instilled, setting the stage for a brighter future. Tailored to individual needs, our holistic support package spans 6-18 months which allows participants time to build an identity free from substance dependency. The emphasis is on developing independent living skills, fostering self-confidence, and promoting social mobility.

I was not in a stable place and still needed support. The move on flats gave me a safe place to work on my future and receive support” – Martin, former participant

Exploring Opportunities in Glasgow:

Situated in the vibrant city of Glasgow, Street Connect taps into myriad opportunities for resettlement. Recovery maintenance coaching via one-to-one support, and community recovery groups creates a supportive environment. Engaging in positive activities and employability development initiatives are integral components, while life skills such as money management, self-care, homecare and building positive relationships complete the resettlement package, ensuring participants are well-equipped to navigate the challenges of independent living while maintaining their recovery.

Education and Employment Pathways:

Street Connect collaborates with Glasgow Kelvin College, Glesga Roasters and others to offer accredited education and vocational training. The Projects Team, another employability initiative, opens avenues for skills development and work readiness. In addition, we offer established employment pathways and internships within Street Connect to those who wish to train in support work. Following this program participants can gain valuable connections across the city, paving the way for a successful transition.

Addressing Glasgow’s Housing Crisis:

Street Connect’s move-on flats and outreach programs play a crucial role in addressing Glasgow’s housing crisis. Recent statistics from national records reveal a stark reality – 244 people died while homeless in Scotland in 2022, a significant increase from 2017. Street Connect’s initiatives aim to curb these distressing numbers by reaching out to the homeless and those at risk of homelessness to encourage them towards recovery from addiction, and, upon reaching recovery, by providing a stable foundation for individuals seeking to rebuild their lives to ensure they have the skills and training to successfully maintain a future tenancy.

Conclusion:

As the organisation addresses Glasgow’s housing crisis, Street Connect empowers individuals to overcome challenges, guiding them toward a future filled with promise and opportunity. With a focus on personalized support, education, and employment, Street Connect is truly a beacon of hope for those on the path to recovery and reintegration.
