CIH Futures launches landmark survey of young housing professionals

CIH Futures, the Chartered Institute of Housing’s board of young professionals, has launched a groundbreaking new survey that will give voice to the next generation of housing leaders.

The survey, launched today in partnership with consultancy firm Altair Ltd, marks the first UK-wide research project of its kind to focus on the experiences, aspirations and insights of young professionals working across the housing sector.

At a time of significant change and challenge within housing, and with current CIH President (and CIH Futures’ first Chair) Elly Hoult’s focus on careers in housing through her CHOOSE Housing campaign, this initiative aims to capture the attitudes of those who will shape the sector’s future — uncovering what motivates them, the barriers they face, and how they view the path ahead. The findings will form the basis of a report later this year, offering practical insights for housing providers, sector bodies and government.

Halisha Kaur, CIH Futures chair, said:  “We’ve heard a lot about the need to professionalise the sector and about the importance of a diverse, resilient workforce — but until now, we haven’t had a UK-wide picture of what young professionals actually think or need. This is our moment to change that.”

The online survey will run until 8 August and is open to all housing professionals under the age of 35 working across the UK’s housing landscape. Responses will be analysed by Altair, with initial insights to be prepared for September 2025’s Housing Community Summit. The full report, to be released later, will outline key themes and findings of this project.

The project will provide a crucial evidence base for those working to strengthen the sector’s workforce strategy, improve career pathways, and that the housing sector reflects the communities we serve.

Halisha Kaur added: “This is about listening — and acting. We want young professionals to feel heard, valued and supported in shaping a housing career that matters. This survey is the first step in doing that.”

CIH Futures is still welcoming sponsors and supporters interested in amplifying the reach and impact of this vital work.
