Comhairle appoints Clyde Gateway’s Martin Joyce as chief executive
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has appointed Martin Joyce as chief executive officer.
Martin is currently executive director of regeneration at Clyde Gateway and joins the Comhairle with strong leadership experience in the public and private sectors.
He was appointed following a thorough selection process overseen by a panel of Comhairle Members and confirmed at a meeting of all Comhairle Members.
Martin has prior experience working in the Western Isles as head of operations for the £125 million Western Isles Schools Project.
A qualified architect, Martin began his career in the private sector before moving to roles with Hub West Scotland, Scottish Borders Council and the University of the West of Scotland.
At Scottish Borders Council, Martin served as director of assets and Infrastructure for four years. In this role, he had overall responsibility for a wide-ranging service and the delivery of the council’s £350m 10-year capital programme.
Councillor Paul Steele, leader of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, said: “I am delighted to confirm the appointment of Martin Joyce to the role of chief executive of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar. Martin was appointed from a strong selection of candidates following a thorough and competitive recruitment process.
“Martin brings a wealth of leadership experience and a proven track record of delivery across the private, public and third sectors. At a time of development and opportunity I am confident that Martin will provide the leadership and strategic direction that the Comhairle and the Western Isles need. Congratulations Martin.”
Martin Joyce will become the 7th chief executive of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar when he takes up the role on 3 April, following the departure of current chief executive Malcolm Burr.

As I prepare to move into the role, I will prioritise developing my understanding of the Comhairle and your communities to ensure that I am best placed to lead the delivery of high-quality services to the people of the Western Isles.”
