The new garden in the Castlemilk area of Glasgow takes up previously underused ground and will be managed by a team of local volunteers. The garden is adjacent to the recently reopened Hub, which is now operating as community space for local groups.

The space has been brightened by a muralled container that will house gardening equipment and supplies. The murals were chosen by the local community and painted by local artist Stephen Machin from Mac Colours.

There is also a seating area surrounded by apple, pear and plum trees along with raised beds for vegetables to be grown.

Ardenglen community investment manager, Fiona McGovern, said: “It’s great and amazing to see this unproductive space now having the potential to become the heart of the local community. The transformation has been amazing. We now have indoor space in The Hub for local community groups to use and it’s now complemented by an amazing outdoor space.”

The centrepiece to the garden is a memory tree, a cherry tree that local people can tag their own personal memories to.

“Community involvement was central to the success of delivering this new garden and outdoor space. It was the drive and determination of local people that made it possible,” added Fiona.
