Consultation launched on planned 12% rent rise in Aberdeen

Council tenants in Aberdeen are being encouraged to take part in a consultation to have their say on proposed changes to their rent.

In order to keep providing tenants with good quality services, including improvements and upgrades to homes, Aberdeen City Council has proposed to increase rent by 12% for 2026/27.

Vice-convener of the Communities, Housing and Public Protection Committee, Councillor Dell Henrickson, said: “By listening to our tenants, we can ensure that their opinions remain at the centre of all decisions, especially as we face some difficult choices.”

The 2025 Rent Consultation, launched this week, will also ask about possible changes to the annual rent cycle from the current 48 weeks to a 52-week period. This would help keep weekly rents lower, making it easier to budget and match up with benefits payments, the council said.

The consultation will be open until 7 November, with those taking part being able to enter into a prize draw to win one of six £50 Aberdeen Gift Cards that can be used in a range of shops and businesses across the city centre.

The results of the consultation will be presented to councillors at the HRA budget meeting on 3 December 2025. Any new rent would start from April 2026.
