Craig Stirrat to retire after over a decade of transformational leadership
Craig Stirrat
Grampian Housing Association’s chief executive, Craig Stirrat, will be retiring in autumn 2026 following 12 years of dedicated service with the organisation and over 43 years’ commitment to the social housing sector.
Craig became chief executive of the Grampian Housing Association Group in April 2022, having joined in 2014. He has been instrumental in shaping the organisation’s strategic direction and expanding its impact in the communities it serves and beyond.
The recruitment of Craig’s successor will begin later this year when the board will appoint an external agency to support Grampian’s search for its next chief executive.
Serving communities across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray, an area spanning 3,000 square miles, Craig has played a pivotal role in strengthening Grampian’s position as one of the North East’s largest and forward-thinking housing providers.
Last year, Grampian Housing Association celebrated its 50th anniversary and is a well-established, regional housing association with deep roots in the neighbourhoods it serves. Its vision to provide great homes, great places to live, great services and great opportunities is clear.
The organisation is driven by its commitment to delivering The Grampian Deal, which places tenants, residents and communities at the heart of everything it does. Alongside managing and maintaining homes to a high standard, Grampian is committed to sustainability, partnership working and continuous improvement in services.
Jim Cargill, chair of the board, said: “The board and I want to express our sincere thanks to Craig for his outstanding leadership, his unwavering commitment to our vision, and his role in ensuring a clear, well‑managed transition.
“Under his leadership, Grampian has delivered a further 1,000 affordable homes and developed its range of services. Craig has also built strong relationships at the highest levels of government and across the housing sector.
“His work has brought lasting benefit to our organisation and our tenants and customers in the communities we serve.
“Major milestones achieved include Grampian being accredited with Best Companies as an outstanding place to work and securing the Customer Service Excellence Standard through the organisation’s flagship Grampian Deal initiative.
“Craig will work a significant notice period to ensure continuity so it remains very much business as usual, and Grampian continues to be in a strong and stable position.”
Craig’s commitment to sustainability, building a strong organisational culture, improving services, and championing customer experience has also been widely recognised across the sector.
In 2023, he was the winner of the Chartered Institute of Housing Lifetime achievement award in recognition of the lasting impact he has made on the housing sector having gone the extra mile during his career which included senior roles with Fife Housing Group, Built Environment Scotland, Aberdeen City Council and Kirkcaldy District Council.
Craig has also made a significant contribution nationally. He currently serves on the board of the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations and is a previous chair of the board of the Chartered Institute of Housing in Scotland, on which he served for more than a decade.
His extensive non‑executive experience has helped shape policy, strengthen governance, and support the development of housing professionals across Scotland.
