Events to celebrate 200 years of Glasgow City Mission
Glasgow City Mission is holding a series of events to mark 200 years since the homelessness charity was formed.
Established by a young Christian, David Nasmith, the Mission was set up as a non-denominational Christian charity which continues today, with staff and volunteers coming from over 100 churches in and around the city.
Shortly after David Nasmith established Glasgow City Mission, he helped set up Missions in Edinburgh, London and Dublin before travelling to Europe and North America, inspiring the establishment of City Missions in many cities.
His legacy is huge when you consider that there are 12 Missions in the UK Movement, 313 Missions in North America and many Missions throughout Europe. The City Mission movement is a truly global network which is estimated to be worth somewhere between £3 billion and £5bn worldwide.
This week, Glasgow City Mission will be joined by colleagues from all around the globe as they come to Glasgow to learn more about the work and history of the charity and enjoy activities around the city.
An invitation-only Civic Reception will be held at Glasgow City Chambers on Thursday 14 May, and the four days of celebrations finish with a church service, open to all, at Glasgow Cathedral on Sunday 17 May.
Glasgow City Mission is also holding a Golf Day at The Carrick course on Loch Lomond on Friday 5 June as part of its bicentenary celebrations and has several other events happening throughout the year.
