Funding supports wide range of community activities across Cowdenbeath area
Councillors have agreed funding to continue supporting a wide range of community activities and services across the Cowdenbeath area.
At its latest meeting, the Cowdenbeath Area Committee approved funding of £63,000 for school holiday activities, £17,500 for community learning and development programmes, and £7,000 to support local community events in the year ahead.
Over the last year, local funding has helped deliver thousands of hours of activities and support for people of all ages across Ward 7 and Ward 8
Holiday programmes took place in communities including Benarty, Bowhill, Kelty, Lochgelly and Cowdenbeath, with transport support offered to children and young people from surrounding villages. Activities ranged from sports, arts and crafts, baking and outdoor play.
Families also benefited from a fully funded residential experience, bringing together parents, children and kinship carers for outdoor activities, learning and shared experiences that helped build confidence, skills and family connections.
Alongside work with young people and families, funding supported a strong programme of adult learning and wellbeing activities, with over 40 community‑based learning programmes delivered. These included cooking on a budget, food hygiene qualifications, wellbeing and resilience groups, walking and talking sessions, crafts, woodwork, photography and groups designed to reduce isolation.
Community celebrations were also a key focus, including the return of YOSCARS, celebrating the achievements of young people, an International Women’s Day programme, and a Volunteer Thank You event, recognising the vital contribution volunteers make across the area.
Members also heard about the ongoing work of the Welfare Support Team, which continues to provide a dignified and personal response to people facing crisis. This includes support with food, fuel, travel and benefits advice, alongside job clubs and outreach work across the community.
Area Committee convenor, Councillor Alex Campbell, said: “This report clearly shows the difference local funding makes to people’s everyday lives. From giving children safe, fun places to go during the school holidays, to helping adults build skills, confidence and connections, this work supports individuals and strengthens our communities.
“I’m particularly pleased to see how the team listens to local people and shapes activities around what communities actually want and need. This funding helps ensure support continues to reach families and individuals who need it most.”
