Creative pupils from St Bride’s Primary School in Glasgow’s Southside have helped bring a touch of stardom to the major new affordable housing development, Queens Garage, by naming the site crane ‘Lana Del Crane’.
AS Homes (Scotland) is currently on site delivering a new 50-home development on Pollokshaws Road on behalf of Southside Housing Association. Amidst construction, the site team visited local school St Bride’s to deliver a health and safety talk, and challenged the children to design posters and ‘name the crane’ that would be onsite for several months.
After receiving a fantastic range of colourful drawings and imaginative suggestions, two winners were chosen. Primary five pupil Ruhee Hossain took the prize for the best crane name suggestion, “Lana Del Crane”, while primary six pupil Aysha Arshad, won the best poster design.
AS Homes site manager John Jamieson recently visited St Bride’s to present the winners with family cinema tickets for Vue Cinemas and some sweet treats.

He said: “The pupils at St Bride’s were incredibly enthusiastic and full of brilliant ideas, and we were genuinely impressed by the creativity they put into both the poster designs and the crane names.
“‘Lana Del Crane’ definitely made us smile and felt like the perfect name for our crane as work gets underway on site. Engaging with local schools is something we’re really passionate about, and it’s great to be able to connect young people with what’s happening in their community while also talking about the importance of construction safety.”
Mr Duffield, acting head teacher at St Bride’s Primary School, added: “It was great to welcome the AS Homes team into the school. The pupils loved learning about the new homes being built around the corner from our school gates, and really embraced the chance to get creative with the competition. Activities like this help pupils see how classroom learning connects to the world around them, and it was fantastic to see their enthusiasm and imagination on display.”
AS Homes is transforming the site of a former Arnold Clark showroom into a mix of one, two and three-bedroom flats across four, five and six-storey blocks. All homes, including wheelchair-accessible properties, are designed by Keppie Design and will be allocated for affordable housing with Southside Housing Association.
Construction is underway and is expected to be completed later this year.
