Glasgow student accommodation development approved after hearing
Glasgow City Council has approved plans to build 152 purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) units across three blocks beside the River Kelvin at Otago Lane.
Situated off Otago Street, the development site has been derelict for over 40 years.
The development site has been derelict for over 40 years, and the proposal aims to address high student demand for nearby accommodation linked to the University of Glasgow, potentially easing pressure on local housing stock.
Comprising 96 studio flats and 56 ensuite rooms, the new flats are expected to open by September 2028. The buildings will range from six to eight storeys in height.
Danehurst Development Limited said the project would address high student demand for nearby accommodation linked to the University of Glasgow, potentially easing pressure on local housing stock.
The design also aims to revitalise a neglected site, turning it into a more attractive and accessible environment for residents and visitors.
Objections were raised by local residents concerned about building height, parking, and impact on the Hillhead Conservation area.
While the planning committee acknowledged concerns about the scale and concentration of PBSAs in the area, permission was granted with conditions after modifications to reduce building height and improve daylighting for neighbours.
