Green light for flats plan at Aberdeenshire nursing home

Kirkton HousePlans to transform a B-listed former nursing home into flats have been approved.

Kirkton House, near Kirkton of Skene, is to be turned into 17 flats, under the plans from developer Kirk Harrison, the Evening Express has reported.

Aberdeenshire Council gave the go ahead for proposals that will see the 19th century building become a mix of two, three and four bedroom apartments.

The grounds include a walled garden and the ruins of a chapel.

The building was previously turned into the Kirkton House Nursing Home in 1986.

The original structure dates from 1827 and was designed by John Smith – once the official city architect.

Kirkton House 2A statement from architects DAB Architecture said the new homes would retain the character of the estate.

The statement said: “A considered and measured approach to the design of this prestigious scheme has been taken, ensuring that the layout and design pays respect to the original part of the house.

“This is to ensure that all the main rooms remain intact and legible and that the very special original features such as plaster ceilings and bay windows are retained and celebrated within the scheme.

“Kirkton House is of significant historic importance, hence its B-listed designation.”
