Hillcrest given green light for 21 new Dundee homes

Dens CGIPlans for the development of 21 affordable flats on the long derelict site of a former Dundee metal works on Dens Road have been approved.

Hillcrest Housing Association acquired the land in March 2015 and the developer, Cullross Limited, is due start building on the site this June with work scheduled to complete late summer 2016.

Development on this land, which has been empty since 2005, is another step forward in the on-going regeneration of Dundee’s Hilltown area.

David Zwirlein, director of development and new business at Hillcrest, said: “The approval of our plans to develop on this brownfield land, in addition to the other affordable housing developments we are bringing to the area, marks an exciting period of transformation for Dundee’s Hilltown.

“Hillcrest and our partners at Cullross and Dundee City Council are delighted to be bringing more quality affordable homes to the Hilltown. We are commitment to the regeneration of the area and to delivering much needed housing to people across the city.”

Emma Garry, development director at Cullross Limited, said: “Cullross is delighted to be working again with Hillcrest to deliver new affordable housing.

“The fact that the site has been vacant and derelict for such a long time makes the project all the more important. This is an exciting time for the Hilltown area and we are pleased to be playing a small role its regeneration.

“Working with Hillcrest, we look forward to transforming the site and welcoming new tenants.”

Plans for the Dens Road development contain a mix of flats for social rent and properties for Mid Market Rent.

Convener of housing, councillor John Alexander, added: “This is another fantastic development which will deliver high quality housing in a popular area of Dundee.

“We, alongside our partners are focussed on breathing new life into the Hilltown which will not only provide 21st century homes but also help provide construction jobs and income for local shops - providing a boost to the local economy.

“We’ve turned the page in the Hilltown and our ambitious plans are beginning to come to fruition.”

The Dens Road project is one of several Hillcrest is handling across the city.

Hillcrest and their partners are currently on-site or have planning approval to develop 123 properties across Dundee by late 2018.
