Housing law expert Jim Bauld to retire

Jim Bauld
With both pride and a little sadness, TC Young has announced the retirement of its highly respected partner Jim Bauld at the end of August.
With a legal career spanning over four decades, including more than 22 years with TC Young, Jim has been a prominent figure in the legal profession across Scotland. A true expert in housing law, Jim has represented clients in some of the most significant and precedent-setting cases in the field. His encyclopaedic knowledge of eviction law, tenancy succession, property access, repairs, and antisocial behaviour has helped shape the legal landscape – and guided countless clients and colleagues alike.
Recognised as a Band 1 practitioner in Chambers Legal Guide for Social Housing, Jim is known for his clarity, pragmatism, and deep-rooted expertise. His work has extended far beyond client matters – from sitting on Scottish Government working groups and authoring influential housing guides, to training legal professionals, landlords, and housing associations across the country. His role as a legal member of the First-tier Tribunal for Scotland across several chambers is just one more testament to his standing in the profession.
While Jim may be hanging up his court robes, he’s not stepping away entirely. He’ll continue his work as a Tribunal chair and remain a friendly face in the sector.
As Jim moves into retirement, TC Young said it wants to take this opportunity to say ‘thank you’.
The firm said: “Thank you for your expertise, your humour, and your unwavering commitment to both clients and colleagues.
“Importantly, while we’ll miss Jim greatly, he leaves behind a strong, expert team who have worked closely alongside him for years. The depth of experience in our litigation and housing law departments ensures continuity for clients and referrers — and we’re proud to continue delivering the high-quality service that Jim helped shape.”
Andrew Cowan, managing partner at TC Young, reflected on Jim’s retirement: “Jim’s career is nothing short of remarkable. His expertise, dedication, and passion for housing law have left an indelible mark on both TC Young and the wider sector. He has been a trusted adviser, a mentor to many and an influential voice in housing law throughout his career.
“While we will miss his presence greatly, Jim leaves behind a strong and talented team who have worked alongside him for many years. His legacy of excellence, integrity, and client focus will continue to shape our work for years to come.”
TC Young added: “From everyone at TC Young — congratulations, Jim. It’s been a privilege.”
