Melville marks 30 years with launch of five-year plan

Melville Housing Association is celebrating 30 years of delivering affordable housing and community support since its founding in 1995, with the unveiling of a plan for the future.

A special celebratory event in Dalkeith brought together tenants, partner organisations, staff, and board members - past and present - to reflect on three decades of progress and achievement, highlighting the lasting impact Melville has made in providing safe, secure homes and fostering thriving communities.

In addition to looking back, Melville also took the opportunity to look forward, launching its new Corporate Strategy for 2026–2031. The five-year plan sets out the organisation’s vision for the future and reaffirms its commitment to providing high-quality homes, excellent services, and strong community partnerships.

“Reaching 30 years is a testament to the dedication of our staff, the support of our tenants, and the strength of our partnerships,” said John McMorrow, Melville chief executive. “As we celebrate this milestone, we’re also proud to launch our new Corporate Plan, which sets a clear direction for the next five years. It’s about building on our strengths, continuing to invest in our homes, and ensuring we remain a trusted and effective organisation for our tenants and for everyone else that we serve.”

Among those at the event was Melville’s longest-serving staff member, head of housing Jane Burnett, the only current member of staff to have been with the organisation from the very beginning, having started as an admin assistant in 1995.

“The Melville of today is almost unrecognisable from the organisation I was part of 30 years ago,” said Jane. “Housing, society and expectations have all changed massively and as an organisation Melville has had to change with them but I’m very proud of the part I’ve played. What hasn’t changed is our commitment to both supporting tenants and investing in our homes and communities, and I look forward to this continuing for the next 30 years.”

Since its establishment in 1995, Melville Housing Association has added over 500 new homes, thanks to the backing of partners including the Scottish Government and Midlothian Council, and supported countless individuals and families. In the past year alone, Melville staff helped tenants claim almost £1.4 million in life-saving financial support.
