Midlothian Council reminds residents of warm and well hubs

With the cold winter weather and the cost of living crisis still hitting households hard, Midlothian residents are being reminded that the warm and well hubs are still operating at Lasswade and Newbattle libraries.

Part of the #MidlothianCares initiative launched by the council, the hubs offer warm spaces and free hot drinks or soup and bread during normal opening hours - just turn up to stay warm and enjoy what’s on offer.

Visitors can also access free wi-fi in both libraries, as well as books, card games and jigsaws. Library staff are also on hand to offer advice and to help make sure customers are getting all the support to which they’re entitled.

The #MidlothianCares winter warm and well hubs are being paid for from Midlothian’s £1.36 million share of the Local Authority COVID Economic Recovery (LACER) Fund distributed by the Scottish Government to councils across Scotland.

Council leader, Councillor Kelly Parry, said: “In these difficult times, we’re aware that not everyone can afford a hot drink or meal or has the money to turn the heating up. These hubs and others like them are vital for many people during the winter months, providing a warm and welcoming space where they can also find a bit of company and support if they need it.”
