More tenants are getting involved in their housing service in North Lanarkshire

The North Lanarkshire Council Tenants Conference 2022

North Lanarkshire Council’s annual review of the Tenant Participation Strategy for 2022/23 shows it’s been the council’s most successful year to date, supporting and empowering tenants to get involved in their housing service.

This success comes on the back of the council’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, which continues year on year, and has seen it welcoming new tenant groups, re-establishing tenant walkabouts and facilitating over 80 sessions and meetings involving tenants and partners.

The council’s five-year strategy - ‘Involving Tenants, Improving Services’ – encourages tenant participation across North Lanarkshire communities by maximising a range of participation and engagement opportunities.

This year’s key achievements include:

  • Delivering training sessions for tenants; including digital support, study visits to new build developments and skills to support tenant involvement in scrutiny and committee work.
  • Re-establishing tenant walkabouts and chairperson meetings in each locality.
  • Hosting the first Annual Tenants Conference in three years, with the theme being ‘Connecting Communities’. This was a great success, with unprecedented attendance figures. 92% of tenants attending agreed that it was very good or good.
  • Tenant Participation Officers working in partnership with the resettlement team to help support Ukrainian tenants who are working towards setting up a Tenants and Residents Association.
  • Assisting the council’s existing tenants’ groups plan their AGM’s and supporting the inception of five new groups.
  • Supporting and facilitating over 80 sessions and meetings with tenants and partners.

Tracy Lennon, tenant participation manager, said: “Our strategy, which was produced after tenant consultation, continues to develop and improve how we communicate with our tenants and residents and ensure we provide opportunities that are accessible to all.

“We offer a wide range of opportunities and it’s great to see more and more people getting involved and taking part in activities that interest them. It’s not just about being involved in housing services, our Tenant Participation team is the central contact between tenants and other council services.

“We continue to build on the real progress being made and ensure the right support is provided to groups to help them thrive. By empowering local tenants and communities, we’re all working together and contributing to the vision for North Lanarkshire by making it the place to live.”
