Net zero uncertainty ‘risks holding back new social homes’, SFHA warns

Richard Meade

Scotland’s net zero housing plans are at risk of holding back the building of new social homes, the chief executive of the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (SFHA) has warned.

In an exclusive interview with The Herald, Richard Meade said housing associations are delaying investment decisions because they still do not know what the Scottish Government’s long-awaited Social Housing Net Zero Standard will require, how much it will cost, or who will pay for it.

The Scottish Government originally opened consultation on a proposed new energy standard for social housing from November 2023 to March 2024.

The SFHA has said that certainty on standards must be supported with significant and fair funding to ensure costs are not passed onto housing associations or tenants.
