Building work resumed this week at Loreburn Housing Association’s development at The Garrick, Stranraer.

Work on the flagship development ceased back in April 2023 when the site’s main contractor, Stewart & Shields, announced its liquidation, leaving Loreburn with an unfinished development.

The redevelopment of the former hospital site, which will form intergenerational housing combined with an employability hub is now scheduled to complete in Summer 2024, with construction firm Ashleigh (Scotland) Limited, taking on the contract.

Gavin Johnston, director of property and development, said: “I am delighted to see the resumption of works to complete the redevelopment of the Garrick site, a crucial project that will deliver a vital resource within a thriving community. After a challenging period, we are pleased to see the project back on track and moving forward towards completion. This project holds significant importance for Loreburn and this progress marks a key milestone in our commitment to delivering new homes in the region.”

Once complete, the redeveloped site will provide a mix of flats and bungalows with a range of design enhancements that support independence and ageing well at home. Onsite support and opportunities to train and gain employment and volunteering experience will be part of the offer for young people. A more intensive care and support service will exist for some tenants.

Kirsteen McGinn, chief executive at Loreburn, added: “I would like to take the opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to the community who have shown great patience during the setbacks which have befallen the project. I look forward to seeing new homes delivered on the site and tenants moving in next year.”
