New home meets additional needs for West Lothian family

David Matulyan

A West Lothian family say they finally feel safe and settled after moving into a new home suited to their young son’s needs.

David Matulyan and Manushak Eknosian, both aged 34, moved into their new Wheatley Homes East home in Deans South last month. The family is delighted to have found a place suitable for raising their child.

Their three-year-old son, David, has a rare genetic condition causing additional support needs.

The family’s previous third-floor home had become increasingly difficult to manage as their son grew older.

Manushak said: “The reason we needed another house is because we used to live on the third floor. As our son was getting bigger, it became difficult going up and down with him.

“He has additional needs and we really needed to move to a ground-floor home.”

The family say the move has already made a huge difference.

David said: “It’s a very beautiful place. We feel safe here and we really like the view, our neighbours and that it’s quiet and clean all around. We used to live behind the shopping centre and that was very loud.”

Another tenant, Alex Huntington, moved into a one-bedroom home in the area, which, he explained, is the perfect size.

He added: “The house itself is brilliant. I really like my open-plan kitchen, it seems very well-built. It seems pretty local to everything, the bus routes are good, there are shops nearby and it’s close to my work as well.

“I think I will be here for a long while. I really like my house and my neighbours are brilliant too.”

James Ward, managing director of Wheatley Homes East, added: “It was vital that we find them a home that would be suitable for the long term and this has made a huge difference to the family.

“Being able to support their son and manage daily life without having the challenge of climbing stairs has been a real benefit.”

The family’s new home is part of phase two of a £9m development being delivered by Wheatley and Springfield Partnerships, part of the wider Springfield Group.

The development includes a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes, as well as a new play park for the community.

The award-winning development was named Affordable Development of the Year (large 100+ homes) at the Homes for Scotland Awards 2026 and will deliver a total of 136 affordable homes when complete.
