New housing proposal for Glenwood Glenrothes

New housing proposal for Glenwood Glenrothes

Demolition of the centre began this year

Fife Council’s Glenrothes Area Committee has given its backing to go out to community consultation for a new housing proposal on the site of the former Glenwood Centre in Glenrothes.

The proposal is for approximately 46 properties within a two and three-storey flatted development.

The development is proposed to be managed equally by Fife Council and Kingdom Housing Association and will include a Community Hub and potentially the development of council sheltered housing on part of the site. The consultation will be held from 27 November until 31 December 2023.

Councillor Judy Hamilton, chair of the Fife Housing Partnership and Fife Council spokesperson for housing, said: “The new housing proposal for Glenwood is a demonstration of our commitment to providing high quality, affordable housing for people in Fife. Never has this been more important than in a cost-of-living crisis, such as this.

“Following the Community Consultation, the Cabinet Committee in February will take a final decision on taking the project forward as part of our Phase 4 Affordable Housing programme to build 3,750 new affordable houses across Fife by May 2029.”

Councillor Craig Walker, chair of Glenrothes Area Committee, added: “It’s great to see one of the outcomes from the ‘Golden Glenrothes Charrette’ come another step closer to reality. Following the Charrette in 2016-17 which was a public workshop to discuss ideas and designs for the local area, it was agreed that a preferred option was to redevelop the flats in the Centre. The local community were intrinsically involved in shaping the design for the overall redevelopment and will continue to be consulted as the plans are developed in more detail.

“It’s good news for the people of the Glenwood area as the regeneration work improves the local environment physically, socially and economically.”
