New tenant marks council housebuilding milestone in North Lanarkshire

A newly settled resident has become the 500th tenant to move into a new build council home by North Lanarkshire Council.

Mrs Doloros Gunn, who’s now happily settled in to her new build council home in Chapelhall, said: “I was very surprised to be told that I’m the 500th tenant to move in to a new build council home, but delighted all the same.

“I’ve lived in Chapelhall for many years and when I received the offer of one of the council’s new homes I jumped at the chance. I moved from a four-in-a-block with a security entry system to a two-bedroom end terrace with its own back and front door. The house is finished to a high standard and it’s so private.

“I love my garden and being able to hang out my washing, particularly in this good weather. The local housing staff couldn’t have been more helpful at making my move a smooth one. I can’t tell you how happy and settled I feel.”

The site of the former St. Aloysius Primary School, Chapelhall, is now transformed into a new council housing development of 30 new, modern, affordable homes. This £5.2 million development, delivered by Cruden Building and Renewals Ltd, comprises a mix of flats, bungalows and houses and is the council’s 22nd completed site.

The homes form part of the NL Homes programme, which has recently been expanded to more than double the affordable homes to 5,000 homes by 2035.

Convener of enterprise and housing, Councillor Allan Graham, visited Mrs Gunn in her new home, together with Gillian Whitehead, housing solutions manager, and presented her with fresh flowers.

Councillor Graham said: “It’s always a pleasure to see our tenants settle in and I’m delighted that Mrs. Gunn is enjoying her new home.

“Building first-class, modern, affordable homes is a priority for North Lanarkshire Council and our plans to do this are hugely exciting and ambitious. We’re Scotland’s largest council landlord and are in the midst of the biggest council housebuilding programme in a generation in Scotland.

“We’re making real progress in delivering new houses across all of our communities, and look forward to welcoming many more tenants into our new homes.”
