New Wheatley homes set to benefit East Lothian village

Ninety new affordable homes in Wallyford will be completed this month, bringing much-needed, energy-efficient housing to communities across East Lothian.

Wheatley Homes is delivering 61 mid-market rent homes and 29 homes designed for people aged 55 and over as part of the development.

The 61 mid-market rent homes, which will be managed by Wheatley Homes on behalf of Lowther, are aimed at households earning less than £46,000 a year who may struggle to afford private rent or have no priority for social housing.

The 29 one‑ and two-bed flats for people aged 55 and over will be part of Wheatley’s Livingwell service, which combines independent living with daily support, including OkEachDay check-ins and concierge assistance, helping residents feel safe, connected and supported in their community.

Laura Henderson, managing director of Wheatley Homes East, said: “We’re pleased to be bringing more high-quality, affordable homes to East Lothian. These new homes will give people a warm, modern and energy-efficient place to live and help meet the growing demand for affordable housing in the area.”

The new homes are being built by McTaggart Construction Ltd and supported through £6.5 million from the Scottish Government’s Affordable Housing Supply Programme, along with £3m from the Scottish Charitable Bond programme and significant investment from Wheatley.

The development features modern, spacious and highly energy-efficient homes, designed to keep running costs low. The wider area benefits from excellent transport links and easy access to local services, helping residents stay connected to work, family and amenities.

Janice Russell, managing director at McTaggart Construction, said: “Wallyford is a development we’re incredibly proud to have been part of. Delivering high-quality, energy-efficient homes for both mid-market rent and the over-55s is exactly the kind of work that makes a real difference to people’s lives.

“We’re delighted to be continuing our partnership with Wheatley Homes East and will shortly be starting work on the next phase at Wallyford, which is testament to the strong working relationship we’ve built together.”
