Substantial progress has been made through the council’s Rapid Re-housing Transition Plan (RRTP) which focuses on swiftly resettling individuals experiencing homelessness into permanent housing and reducing reliance on temporary accommodations.

Michael McPake, convener of housing, said: “The RRTP reflects our commitment to creating sustainable housing options quickly and efficiently. By working with our partners, we’ve strengthened our position to provide accessible, long-term housing solutions, ensuring a positive outcome for people within our communities.”

The council’s RRTP, approved in 2018, aligns with the Scottish Government’s Ending Homelessness Together Action Plan.

Successful projects to help vulnerable people and families across North Lanarkshire include:

• The Homes First project, which offers intensive support to vulnerable homeless individuals.
• Upscaling Homes First to support 47 individuals, with a 100% success rate in sustaining housing for those with complex needs.
• Implementation of a Prevention Officer role, addressing tenancy-related issues and providing housing options advice.
• Extension of the Furniture Fund and creation of a Technology Fund, enhancing the well-being and personalisation of homes for homeless households.

Future initiatives, include a Household Support Fund for young single households facing financial hardship, a collaboration with Barnardo’s for Keys to the Future, offering support to families experiencing homelessness and working with the Alcohol and Drug Partnership on an ‘Out of Hours’ Crisis Response Service.

Councillor McPake added: “Challenges persist due to the cost-of-living crisis, rising mortgage rates, and evolving housing market dynamics. Homelessness applications have risen by 13%, mirroring national trends, with financial pressures and disputes within households being contributing factors.

The Scottish Government’s Ending Homelessness Together Fund has contributed £391,000 towards preventing homelessness in North Lanarkshire during the current financial year.
