Objectivity: a lack of bias, judgement, or prejudice

Objectivity is essential for Committee/Board members, as they are relied upon to bring that very perspective to discussions and decision-making process. A step removed from the operational staff-driven functions; Committee/Board members are expected to approach decisions without attachment.

This is not always easy as when you are a Committee/Board member you must be invested in the success of the organisation to want to participate, and the best decisions come from varied and critical discussion, that inevitably requires people to hold different viewpoints on an issue.

So how do we bring these skills, and the work and life experience we have, that makes us valued members, to the table whilst remaining objective?

The answer is to be aware of your own window on the world, to explore what it means to be objective, and to understand the various types of noise and bias that may come into play when discussing and making decisions and be able to assess these accordingly.

By having self-awareness through recognising and managing the influence of your own opinions and experiences, you will distance yourself from personal bias and this will strengthen your Committee/Board and organisation.

SHARE is pleased to announce their new course, Remaining Objective for Committee/Board, which takes place on 18th July at 5.30pm.
