A Broxburn charity helping families in crisis has received a £2,000 donation from a local housebuilder to support its work across West Lothian.
River Kids, which provides essential items to children and families experiencing poverty and housing instability, has been named as one of Persimmon Homes East Scotland’s Community Champions.
The Bathgate-based developer made the donation to help the charity continue delivering its Essential Foundations for Childhood project, which supplies basics such as clothing, beds and household goods to families in need.
The cheque was presented by Persimmon Homes East Scotland alongside Meghan Gallagher MSP and local councillor Janet Campbell, who joined the charity to hear more about its work supporting families across the region.
Demand for the service is rising, with the charity receiving 649 referrals in 2025 – a 12% increase on the previous year – as more households struggle with the cost of living. In some cases, families are moving into accommodation with very few belongings, leaving children without everyday essentials.
River Kids works closely with professionals across the area, including health centres, schools and social workers, to ensure support reaches those who need it most.
Meghan Gallagher MSP said: “I was delighted to join Persimmon Homes at River Kids to learn more about the incredible work they do to support families across West Lothian. This is an excellent example of business giving back to communities through supporting local charities who directly help families experiencing poverty or difficulties because of the cost-of-living crisis. This work is vital and I hope that they continue to receive the financial support needed to keep this charity going.
“It was wonderful to meet some of the team at River Kids and I am very much looking forward to catching up with them in the run up to Christmas, as they begin their preparations for the Christmas Toy Appeal.”
Local councillor, Janet Campbell, added: “Thanks to Stephen for showing us around the Broxburn base this morning. River Kids do fantastic and unfortunately much needed work across West Lothian, helping families living with poverty. The charity works directly with professionals supporting disadvantaged families across our area and I am pleased to be able to support the valuable work River Kids carry out.”
Keeley Renton, River Kids, commented: “On behalf of River Kids I would like to thank Persimmon Homes for their ongoing support. This donation will help us continue to provide essential support to children and families throughout West Lothian. Many of our beneficiaries navigate persistent material deprivation, domestic abuse, displacement, and a range of other crises. This donation will allow us to not only provide essentials but also stability during times of crisis.”
Laura Still, sales director of Persimmon Homes East Scotland, said: “River Kids does incredibly important work supporting families across West Lothian. We’re proud to support them through our Community Champions programme and help them continue reaching those most in need.”
