Plans lodged to convert landmark Paisley building into flats
A proposal to transform one of Paisley town centre’s best‑known buildings into new homes has been submitted to Renfrewshire Council.
John Taylor - Architect, acting for G64 Trading, is seeking permission to convert the B‑listed property at 5 New Street into eight flats arranged across the first, second and attic floors. The plans outline a mix of two and three‑bedroom apartments designed to make use of the building’s distinctive internal spaces.
The ground floor, most recently occupied by West College Scotland’s performing arts department, would be repurposed for Class 4 business use.
A planning statement notes that the design aims to balance efficient layout with minimal disruption to the historic fabric, resulting in “a degree of variation even within the same type of dwelling”. It also confirms that a full fire‑sprinkler system would be installed from above to avoid disturbing original cornicing and ceiling features.
The building, which dates from 1908 and was once home to the YMCA, was designed by renowned architect Thomas Graham Abercrombie in the Beaux‑Arts style.
