Primary garden transformed thanks to Dumfries and Galloway volunteers

Volunteers from companies across Dumfries and Galloway have joined forces to transform a school garden.

Wheatley Homes’ Neighbourhood Environmental Teams (NETs) joined forces with suppliers, contractors at Sanquhar Primary to upgrade the garden area and make it a place children could enjoy throughout the year.

The makeover was one of the activities taking place across the country throughout the week, shining a spotlight on the essential work Wheatley’s environmental teams carry out in communities every day.

Around 120 volunteers from Wheatley’s suppliers and contractors gave up their time to support community activities during the week.

Samantha Clark, Primary 4 teacher at Sanquhar Primary, said: “Without the volunteers, the children wouldn’t have been able to use the garden again this year. The fact they volunteered their time to come in and help us was absolutely brilliant. We really appreciated it - we need all the help we can get, so this has been fantastic.”

Volunteers and partner organisations rolled up their sleeves to weed, tidy, plant and help create a welcoming outdoor space for learning and play.

STRADA Environmental, an asbestos removal firm, was one of the companies that volunteered at Sanquhar Primary. Their managing director, Andy Gray, took part in the work.

He said: “At STRADA, we recognise our commitment and responsibility beyond the products and services we provide, and we understand the role we can play in improving and developing the community.

“It also brings us together as a business. Coming out here and getting involved with the local community we work in was a great opportunity for the team.”

The action day at Sanquhar Primary was one of dozens of community clean‑ups, improvements and environmental projects taking place in Wheatley communities across Scotland during Spring into Action, which ran from Monday 16 March to Friday 20 March.

Jennifer Anderson, director of neighbourhoods at Wheatley Group, said: “We were really pleased that so many volunteers were able to join us through the Community Benefits programme to support our latest Week of Action.

“The energy and dedication of the volunteers were truly inspiring. It wasn’t just about making our neighbourhoods look better - it was about fostering community pride, encouraging ownership, and showing what can be achieved when we work together.

“We are grateful to everyone from our partner organisations who joined us and helped make our communities greener and cleaner for our customers.”
