Public Art: Parkhead Housing Association

unnamed (3)The BBC commissioned two artists, Becky and Louise (also known as Good Wives and Warriors), to create an art work on a gable end in the city to celebrate the Commonwealth Games.

Parkhead Housing Association was chosen as the preferred landlord not only because of its location in the heart of the Commonwealth Games side of town, but due to its knowledge and experience of improving the environmental, economic and social circumstances of the Parkhead community.

The gable end of Beattock St was selected and the artists (who trained at Glasgow School of Art) began working with the local community to create the design, gathering stories about what Glasgow means to local people. The ideas were incorporated into the design. The process of creating this work of art was filmed for the documentary, and a 30 minute documentary was broadcast in July 2014 on BBC Scotland.

Along with our wider role remit, Parkhead Housing Association continues to build and develop, with Whiterose Phase 2 being completed later this year, providing 85 much needed homes with an investment of £10 million in the local area. With future developments of 45 units on-site later in the year Parkhead Housing Association continues to play a pivotal role in the regeneration of the community.
