Reidvale marks 50 years with new logo
Reidvale Housing Association has launched a new anniversary logo to mark 50 years of community-led housing in Dennistoun.
The move deliberately links the organisation’s origins in local activism with its recent campaign to remain under community control and its ongoing work to preserve traditional tenement homes.
Founded in 1975, Reidvale was created by residents who organised to stop the demolition of tenement blocks south of Duke Street. At a time when large parts of Glasgow were being cleared, people in Dennistoun argued that their homes and streets were worth saving. That campaign led directly to the formation of Reidvale as one of Scotland’s earliest community-based housing associations, with local people at the centre of decision-making.
Over the following decades, Reidvale Housing Association refurbished more than a thousand tenement homes, delivered new affordable housing and invested in the wider neighbourhood. The association’s housing remains largely pre-1919 tenement stock, meaning that preservation, maintenance, and long-term stewardship have always been central to its role.
That same founding principle of community control resurfaced in recent years, when Reidvale’s future was under discussion, and members were asked to decide whether the association should transfer to a larger national provider. In 2024, members voted to remain independent, a decision widely seen as echoing the original campaign that led to Reidvale’s creation.
Speaking as the anniversary logo was unveiled, chairperson Denise Dempsey said the milestone was as much about continuity as it was about celebration.
“Reidvale exists because local people came together 50 years ago and said they wanted to protect their homes and keep control within the community. When members chose to keep Reidvale independent, they were carrying that same spirit forward. Our new logo reflects that history and our determination to protect our tenements and our community for the long term.”
Today, Reidvale is delivering a major programme of stonework and safety investment across its tenement blocks, strengthening asset planning, and addressing the long-term challenges that come with caring for historic buildings. This work connects directly back to the association’s original purpose, preserving homes that might otherwise have been lost; while ensuring they remain safe, affordable, and fit for the future.
The new 50th anniversary logo will be used throughout the year across Reidvale’s communications, events, and engagement activity. It is intended to symbolise both the association’s roots in community action and its ongoing commitment to local accountability at a time of change in the housing sector.
