Vacant for several years, and experiencing some deterioration, the building was in need of repair, restoration and regeneration.

Melville Housing Association purchased the building last year, and undertook the restoration necessary to convert it into its new HQ, with a museum for the Dalkeith History Society and an area for community space.

The transformation was aided by funding from Historic Environment Scotland and the Lottery Fund.

Hardies Property & Construction Consultants, which provided a range of CDM services to Melville for the project, have since relocated into the redeveloped building alongside Melville and Shepherd Chartered Surveyors (with which it merged last year).
