Pupils in Glasgow have created works of art to mark the anniversary of the historic local battle that forced Mary Queen of Scots to flee to England.

The children of Battlefield Primary answered housing developer Sanctuary Homes’ battle cry to acknowledge the 450th anniversary of the Battle of Langside.

Sanctuary has transformed a section of hoarding around the city’s former Victoria Infirmary into a gallery of the pupils’ work.

Last week’s public unveiling was the first of a weekend of community activities about the battle.

Gillian Lavety, Sanctuary’s development director – Scotland, said: “We thought the best way to recognise Langside’s past was to ask local children, the people who will shape the area’s future.

“The pupils’ art is colourful, creative and a wholly positive response to a gory event in 1568.

“We are delighted to display the children’s work and hope the local community and general public enjoy their art as much as we do.”

All 38 pupil creations can be viewed on the hoarding on the corner of Battlefield Road and Langside Road. Sanctuary has planning permission to create 413 new flats, plus offices and retail units, on the site behind the hoarding.

Bailie Josephine Docherty said: “It’s great to know that Battlefield Primary is learning about this significant time in this city and Scotland’s history and it shows the geographical and historical importance of this area of the city.

“I know everyone will enjoy the superb art work commemorating the 450th anniversary of this event.”
