Sanctuary Scotland has helped fund after-school clubs in two of Scotland’s most deprived communities.

The housing association teamed up with Inspiring Scotland and the Jeely Piece Club to provide a free service in Priesthill and Househillwood, Glasgow.

Each session has been attended by up to 74 children since the clubs began in January.

Grace Lamont, the Jeely Piece Club’s head of play, said: “The important thing for us is that when children come they have fun. After that they can take the play in any direction they choose.

“Priesthill and Househillwood have had the highest number of people attending and that is thanks to folks like Sanctuary. The clubs have helped to build children’s self-esteem and encouraged them to interact with children they wouldn’t normally come across.

“We get feedback every session from parents. Kids that were totally isolated now mix with other children. It gives parents peace of mind their children are in a safe environment, they’re having fun and they’re thoroughly exhausted after it.

“That’s got to benefit a family.”

According to the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation, Priesthill and Househillwood are among the most deprived communities in the country.

The session on March 31 will use up the last of the project’s funding, meaning the popular and cost-free clubs face an uncertain future.

Irene McKean is among a number of local parents being trained in the hope the after-school clubs can continue.

Irene, a Sanctuary Scotland tenant, said: “The clubs are free and that is a big thing because Pollok’s a deprived area.

“The kids so look forward to it. It brings families together because you interact with the parents when they bring their children and pick them up.

“The training from the Jeely Piece staff helps your confidence dealing with the kids.

“It’s a fantastic wee club, it’s great fun and it’s created a great community feeling.”
